‘Government must make a stand on Indonesian maid issue’

PUTERI Umno has urged the Government not to give in to "extreme demands" by Indonesia on domestic maids.

"The employer-maid contract already includes a provision for a day off. It is up to the discretion of employers to decide on which day. It is not a new agreement," said its chief Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

"Most employers here allow their maids to rest, socialise and go out, at times even more than once a day," she said in her speech at the Puteri delegates meeting.

She said employers had to bear greater risks if their maids ran away and had their passports with them.

She added that there was also the danger that if maids were allowed to go out on their own, they would meet other maids and compare workloads and salaries as well as get into trouble.

Citing the threat to freeze entry of Indonesian maids and to fix a minimum salary of RM600 per month, Rosnah described the Indonesian demands as inappropriate, especially when the cost of recruitment had surpassed RM5,000 but the service was still inefficient.

"Every negotiation should result in a win-win situation for the maids and the employers. Therefore, we want the Government, particularly the Human Resources Ministry, to make a stand.

"All new regulations cannot be agreed upon simply because there are demands. The welfare of employers in this country cannot be set aside just like that."

Rosnah proposed that the Government makes the job of a maid "interesting" by introducing terms such as domestic consultant, domestic supervisor or domestic assistant.

Sabah Puteri chief Musliati Moslimin called on the Government to set up a special fund to help young women interested in business.

"The fund must function as a starting fund for young women who are serious about starting a business. It should have a simple application process for funds and these women should be advised from the start to the end on how to start a business, she said.

Perak Puteri chief Salbiah Mohamad said Puteri members must unite and arm themselves with knowledge to woo new members.

Puteri Umno has set a target of increasing its members to one million from the current 328,000 within two years.

Its vice-chief Shahanim Mohamad Yusof said the move would be part of the wing's key performance indicator (KPI).

"We welcome the party deputy president's call for Puteri to have a KPI to increase members, register them as voters and create network with non-governmental organisations," she told reporters.
