KLANG: The decision on whether Indonesia would lift the freeze on sending maids to Malaysia would be known by next month, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said yesterday.

He said Malaysia and Indonesia were in the midst of discussing the matter to arrive at a solution for mutual benefit.

"There are one or two pending issues and if the two countries can settle them, the freeze can be lifted (at the end of the year)," he told reporters after presenting school uniforms to underprivileged students in the Kota Raja constituency here.

On June 25, Jakarta issued an order to freeze the sending of maids to the country, following numerous complaints of maid abuse by their employers.

On Sept 2, Malaysia and Indonesia agreed that the maids would be given a day off every week and be allowed to keep their passports during their stay in the country.

The decision was reached at the third meeting of the working committee on Malaysia-Indonesia cooperation on housemaids on Aug 20. -- Bernama
