MUM’S ROLE: A task best left to mothers

I REFER to the report "Indonesia seeks RM800 salary for maids" (NST, Sept 5).

In families where it is possible to live on one income (the husband's), it may be an opportune time for working mothers with young children to rethink carefully about bringing up the children themselves rather than leaving this important responsibility to maids.

In some cases, where the mother has a job (thus necessitating the hiring of a maid), the extra income she brings in may amount to only a few hundred ringgit after paying the maid's proposed RM800 salary and the cost of her upkeep.

But the lost opportunity and damage done in not providing a proper upbringing to the children in their formative years may be too high a price to pay.

No maid can match the tender loving care and attention that only a mother can provide her children -- to give them a good head start in life. Parents sometimes may have to make sacrifices for their children's future.

Working mothers should be allowed to go back to work without being penalised in terms of career advancement, once their children start schooling.

The nation (and employers, too) should sacrifice a little for the good of the future generations of Malaysians by allowing mothers to go back to work (if they wish) to save for their children's tertiary education.
