JAKARTA: Residents of Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, plan to clean up the Ciliwung River.

The residents set up a Green Care Community and will collaborate with a native Betawi organization to clean the river next weekend using makeshift rafts.

Residents will clean the river from Srengseng Sawah to Lenteng Agung using 20 rafts, from July 18 to 19, Lenteng Agung neighborhood leader Sarmili said.

It had South Jakarta Mayor Syahrul Effendi's backing, he added.

He said Jagakarsa district was ready to clean up the river, while Lenteng Agung now had a trash compactor for waste management.

Sarmili said he hope all neighborhoods would get one.

"It's expensive. The medium-capacity machine we ordered from IPB *Bogor Institute of Agriculture* costs around Rp 7 million.

"So we hope private parties and the city administration will help us," he said as quoted by vivanews.com.

The past three months have seen at least three events promoting a clean Ciliwung, supported either by the city administration or local communities. -JP
