Indonesia extended its postponement from sending workers to Malaysia following the inability of Malaysian officials to review the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia with Indonesian counterparts, an Indonesian senior official said on Sunday.
"The postponement would be extended to July 21 from the initial schedule that last on July 15," Tumbur Gultom, the Indonesian official who oversees the placement and protection on Indonesian migrant workers said in Kupang, the capital city of East Nusatenggara province on Sunday.
Tumbur pointed out that the MoU review is essential to provide better protection for Indonesian workers that consisted of proper wage, non discriminative and fair treatment, provide a day off in a week, let the workers to hold their passports and early detection on the workers' condition.
In the would-be reviewed MoU, the Malaysian government is also asked not to provide visas for Indonesian maids who came to Malaysia without any official recommendation from Indonesian government agency, Tumbur added.
"If they don't agree with our proposals, the postponement could be extended or could be upgraded to a ban from sending workers to Malaysia since it is closely related to Indonesian workers dignity and Indonesian image in countries abroad," Tumbur was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.
Earlier reports said that many Indonesian women workers were abused, tortured and some of them not paid by their Malaysian employers. Some of those victims returned to Indonesia with wounds all over their bodies.
Malaysian government had conducted trials against violent workers who treat their maids inappropriately. Some of them already imprisoned for their misdeeds.
