KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia-Indonesia working group meeting on Indonesian foreign workers in Malaysia has been deferred to a later date this month.

The Indonesian authorities were to have made a decision on whether they would lift the temporary ban of sending maids to Malaysia at the meeting, which was to be held in Bali tomorrow.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, however, said that Indonesia had requested for a postponement of the meeting because of logistics issues.

Asked if Indonesia would lift the ban after the meeting, Subramaniam said that was what Indonesian Manpower and Transmigration Minister Dr Erman Suparno had said at their meeting here last Monday.

The temporary ban which took effect on June 26, was in response to public anger over the ill-treatment of Indonesian maid Siti Hajar Sadli, 33, by her Malaysian employer, who has since been arrested and charged.

Speaking after opening the Asia e-Learning Conference 2009 here yesterday, Subramaniam said: "I think they're trying to resolve the issue by July."

Subramaniam said there were certain matters which Malaysia had agreed to, including allowing a day off for maids.

"We have also decided on widening the workmen's compensation to cover maids, having a standard contract and ensuring prompt monthly payment of their salaries."

Subramaniam said Malaysia had decided on these matters about seven months ago.

There are 1.2 million Indonesians working in Malaysia, of whom 300,000 are maids.
