An official said at least six Indonesians have drowned after a boat carrying up to 30 illegal immigrants capsized in Malaysian waters.

Marine police inspector Mohamad Mashari Sathi said naval search teams have found six bodies off the coast of southern Malaysia.

He said officials received a phone call from a man who claimed to be one of the boat passengers late Tuesday. The man said a merchant ship had rescued him and some of the others when their boat capsized but several people were still missing.

Mashari said Wednesday the boat was believed to be taking the Indonesians back home to Batam island, which is about 45 minutes from Malaysia's southernmost Johor state.
