A BANK executive who went on trial with his wife and mother-in-law for abusing his Indonesian maid was cleared on Tuesday of three charges after compounding the matter.

Mr Stanley Kuah Kian Chong, 38, a Malaysian, had paid $5,000 to Miss Susilawati Kusnata, 23, to compound the three offences.

These were for punching the maid on the forehead and slapping her, spraying a stain remover on her hands, and punching her on the forehead, pulling her hair and banging it against the wall in 2007.

The maid had been working for the family in Pasir Ris since March 8 that year.

She ran away from the flat on July 5 as she could not take the abuses any longer.

She was among four prosecution witnesses who testified at the trial of Mr Kuah, his wife, Loke Phooi Ling, 38, and mother-in-law, Teng Chen Lian, 68, both Malaysians.

But the two women decided to plead guilty last Friday after nine days of hearing.

Loke, a permanent resident here, who faced 32 charges, admitted to 10 counts of maid abuse while her mother, Teng, admitted to one charge of stamping on the victim's thigh, slapping and hitting her. She had also pushed the maid, causing her to fall. Both offences happened on July 5, 2007.

They will be sentenced later on Tuesday.
