Ministry calls for ILO assistance to promote migrant workers' rights

The Manpower and Transmigration Ministry is calling for the help of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in promoting migrant workers' rights, Minister Erman Soeparno said on Wednesday.

"In reality, many employer countries fail to cater for migrant workers' rights, such as protection rights, human rights and normative rights," he said during a talk show on the role and contribution of the ILO.

He said employer countries should perceive workers as human capital, instead of labor which has a more feudalistic meaning.

"Human capital is in line with finance capital. They perceive workers as capital that can benefit the economy, while the "labor perception" sees workers in a patron-client relationship," he said.

He said that the ILO could not turn their back on reality and it was their role to promote a more equal perception.

Alan Boulton, the ILO chairman in Indonesia said he understood the challenges in promoting social justice and equality.

"The ILO has been promoting these messages for 90 years and one of our strength that will help our mission is the tripartite constituency (the government, business, and the workforce)," he said.

In Indonesia, the ILO will celebrate its 90th anniversary by holding a three-day photo exhibition of the working world starting from April 22 at the ministry.
