BEFORE any conclusive agreement is reached between Malaysia and Indonesia on the employment of maids, I hope the following factors will be carefully considered by the Human Resources Ministry.
Firstly, cases of employers abusing maids are insignificant. There were seven reported cases out of 320,000 maids employed. As such, the ministry and the relevant agencies must not over-react.
Secondly, a maid’s earning of RM500 to RM700 should not be considered as paltry, as the employer also provides board, lodging and medical expenses. The total can be as high as RM1,100 to RM1,300. In fact, they can save up their entire pay.
Allowing the maids to hold their passports is asking for trouble. Preventing possible offences is better. Media reports of maids running off with employer’s jewellery are common. It is easy for the maid to run away if the passport is with her.
Furthermore, the duties of a maid cannot be standardised. An employer’s needs will vary from people to people. It is the employer who pays the salary and the duties must be mutually agreed.
Thus, it is best that the Human Resources Ministry hold a meeting with employers and maid agencies to come to a better understanding.
