Hong Kong (ANTARA News) - A 32-year-old Hong Kong housewife was Friday jailed for seven months for branding the arm of her Indonesian maid with a hot iron.

Ng Bik-man attacked her 24-year-old maid in August after accusing her of letting her eight-month-old son move too close to the iron while he was moving about in his baby walker.

She at first threatened to burn the maid's face with the iron but then scalded her arm with it, Hong Kong's Tsuen Wan magistrates court was told. The maid was left with serious burns.

Mother-of-two Ng, whose lawyer argued the incident happened out of concern and love for her son, was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

At Friday's sentencing hearing, magistrate John Glass told Ng her crime was serious and said she had shown no remorse. She had also violated an employee's trust in her, he was quoted by DPA as saying.

More than 200,000 women from the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand work as live-in domestic helpers for Hong Kong families, earning a government-set minimum wage of around 450 US dollars a month.(*)
