A FORMER air force staff sergeant was convicted on Thursday of persistently abusing his former Indonesian maid three months after she started work.

Tong Chew Wei, 31, now an administrative executive, was found guilty of hitting Miss Nana Widayanti, 25, with a broomstick, scalding her, stomping on her feet, punching her and grabbing her hair.

The seven incidents took place at his Jurong West flat between December 2006 and Feb 25, 2007.

During the trial, the maid told the court that she was so hungry that she stole the baby's milk to eat on Feb 25.

When Tong told her that he would report her to the police for theft, Miss Widayanti ran away and camped out at HDB void decks until another Indonesian maid came to her aid.

The case was adjourned to March 5 for mitigation and prosecution's submission on sentence.

Tong may be fined up to $1,500 or jailed for up to 18 months on each of the seven charges.
