A housewife whose ill health made her emotionally unstable was yesterday fined HK$3,000 for slapping her Indonesian maid for waking up five minutes late.
Kwun Tong Magistrate Anthony Kwok Kai-on said the action of 29-year-old Lok Hung-tan would give foreign domestic helpers the impression Hong Kong employers were brutal. But because Lok was suffering from kidney dysfunction and depression he was limiting her punishment to a fine, with HK$2,000 going to the court and HK$1,000 to the maid.
Lok had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an incident on December 17. She had threatened to deduct HK$100 from the salary of her maid, Yatini, for waking up late. When Yatini protested, Lok slapped her, causing her lips to bleed and her face to become red and swollen.
The defense said Lok's husband promised to do the housework and not employ a helper until his wife was stable. BEATRICE SIU
